Wiangkalong is situated among different cities of Lanna kingdom and has the ridge of the hill that separates Lampang and Chiang Rai from each other, and also there is the long path on the hills at the east and the north to Payao and Chiang Mai. From historical evidences Lanna kingdom was built in about 13th century as the center of other cities situated at the upper part of the basin of the river in the reign of Phraya Mangrai, the first king of Mangrai royal family. The golden age of Lanna pottery starts in 14th-16th century with the best kind of Lanna pottery and that was about the same period of the golden age of Sukhothai pottery.
From the exploration of the archeology historian, many of the remains of ancient stove were found in many cities of the North and they are named according to the place where they were found. For examples, if they were found at Ban Wiangkalong, they are called Wiangkalong pottery.

The Nature of Wiangkalong
Wiangkalong pottery is the most famous and expensive pottery of all Lanna pottery as it is well accepted by the historians, collectors and both Thai and foreign antique vendors with the reasons that it has beautiful shape and pattern and also has more tenacious substance than others.

Wiangkalong is the best place for manufacturing the pottery because the soil here is the best quality to be made to the unyielding pottery. The soil itself is white, somewhat like kaolin, and can be light yellow or grey. It is also sticky, flexible and delicate.

The unique characteristic of Wiangkalong pottery is the thin and soft touch. The main color of enamel is dull grey blended with a bit of green and is coated with only one color or with the pattern painted in black under the coat. The only distinguished feature of the one with only one color coated is that the color looks dull grey like a cloud and sometimes light blue like the Chinese pottery of Sung dynasty of China (960-1280 A.D.) called Ching Pai. Another special feature is that it is thickly coated with a glint and crack look like a net and varied from pale white to yellowish honey and olive green.

Uses of Wiangkalong
In the past Wiangkalong pottery was made for daily use and as the gifts. However, at present there is no factories that manufacture Wiangkalong pottery as the manufacturing process is complicated and it has to be made with the authentic material with special technique. K.P Business Group Co., Ltd. has been conducting research and experiment for many years in order to study and understand how the pottery is made and finally found the results that encourage us to produce it as to preserve and to promote it as our cultural heritage. The items are carefully handmade with special consideration on the original pattern, shape, soil used, and enamel and they can also be used for present daily life such as plates, bowls, jars and cups.
